Hiking in Gros Morne National Park (Gros Morne Mountain AKA James Callaghan Trail)

Distance: 16km return

Time: 6-8 hours

Terrain/Elevation: Mountainous/10-806m

Tips for Hiking Gros Morne Mountain:

A good chunk of this hike is very difficult rocky terrain that is very steep. If you don’t think you can do a difficult hike that is this long, there are a ton to choose from on the National Parks website that are varying abilities.

IMG_3004When you reach the top of the mountain after your big climb, it is extremely windy and there is no shelter! Some hikers build little rock wind shelters to hunker down in to eat lunch but they can be crowded because everyone is cold!  Even though the weather might be hot out, it will be cold on the top of the mountain – bring layers.

IMG_3009Go off of the beaten path! Some of the best views we saw were because we wandered away from the path to check out the surroundings.

  1. So much green-land, so many stonevard views, and a few, beautiful people – this makes a wonderful hike in the world!

I would not recommend hiking without adequate foot wear and comfortable trousers, in case you should have to experiment with falling, and a good camera so the memories can come home with me!
